The Sebastian Area Historical Museum is dedicated to preserving the Sebastian area’s history through publications and research. This museum also protects historical materials and sites for the enjoyment of past, present, and future generations. The Sebastian Aria Historical Museum also presents local history to the community of Sebastian and visitors through educational programs and exhibits.

This museum is located in the 1927 former Historic Sebastian Public School. It exhibits various topics such as Pelican Island, Family Life, Fishing, Military, Early Shops and Trades, clothing, quilts, agriculture, military, and transportation. The Sebastian Area Historical Museum also features a bookshop and research facilities. Admission to the museum is free, but donations are kindly appreciated.

A visit to this museum is an opportunity to take a journey into the past. The museum’s collections bring to life Sebastian’s rich heritage. The Ais Indians lived in this area and left behind their pottery and shells, which were found and donated. Treasure ships foundered off the coast, and some recovered items are exhibited. Implements of the fishing and farming industries that were mainstays of the early economy are displayed. The abundant wildlife and rich soil provided enormous harvests sent north for profit. Reminders of the boats on the waterways and then the railroad that sent these harvests north are here, as well as pioneer family life that can be envisioned throughout the museum.

With volunteer staff ready to welcome you and answer any questions you may have, the Sebastian Area Historical Museum is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. It allows you to explore different exhibits and artifacts to watch Sebastian’s history come alive.
