CRUSHIN’ IT: SHOP WITH A COP
The Charity Crush Calendar has been a staple of Capt Hirams Resort’s community outreach efforts since 2018. The Crush Calendar is comprised of twelve different nonprofits and community organizations – one for each month of the year. Each month $1 from every Capt’s Crush, our signature cocktail, is donated to the featured organization. Once the donations have been collected representatives from both Capt Hirams and the featured charity meet for a check presentation and photograph. From cleaning our waterways, to supporting community healthcare, to building affordable housing for families, Capt Hirams Resort is committed to “crushing” as many goals as possible!
CHARITY SPOTLIGHT: SHOP WITH A COP
The Sebastian Police Department’s “Shop with a Cop” program was the Crush Calendar recipient for July 2019. Shop with a Cop is annual event that takes place at the Sebastian Walmart. Members of different law enforcement agencies volunteer their time to give the children of the community a memorable Christmas celebration. The program is geared toward children and families in need that may not otherwise be able to celebrate Christmas. The Crush Calendar proceeds, along with various other donations and fundraising events, go toward purchasing Walmart gift cards.
The event starts with two buses filled with children being escorted by police cars down US 1 towards the Walmart. Once the children arrive, they are paired with an officer to shop with and receive a $100 gift card. This event is just as rewarding for the officers as it is for the children. Shopping with the cops helps children get to know the officers and build a relationship with them. After the main event, the kids are given a lunch provided by Walmart and get to visit with Santa Claus before they leave.
There is an application process to participate in this event. The requirements are that the child cannot have not participated before, meets the age requirement (5-17), lives in Indian River County, and needs assistance. Indian River County schools can also provide names of children that are in need but may not be aware of the program.
